Temperature around -15 Celsius, little wind, partly cloudy conditions welcomed us this morning. The trails were covered with a layer of feather like snowflakes, which gave the tracks a bit more grip than usual, but still kept our skis gliding well enough. The light conditions were amazing all day, so as the snowcovered trees and formations.

Weekend update

Nice snowy weekend with light snowfall, temperature around - 10Celsius and little wind. Yesterday it became almost sunny, but the clouds and fog took over again. In last 24 hrs we received about 3cm of snow. Total snowdepth after these windy and snowy days is around 75cm (windblown and consolidated state). Today at 7AM: -11 Celsius, almost no wind, fair visibility, light snowfall. Most of the trails were prepared yesterday - I guess with some snow on them now. Enjoy your weekend!

Great day out in the deep snow around Kyrkjegardsfjellet. It has been snowing and blowing on and off for the last two days, but could not stop us from exploring our "snowcovered wonderworld". After a few off piste challenges we were delighted to ski in freshly prepared tracks too.

My first day could not be better than skiing in snowy, windy and cool conditions. All those factors make our next days even more enjoyable. It was around -10 Celsius all day, windy in open areas, but really nice in forests. Most of the trails dispappeared, but we did mind having more snow underneath our skis, which came to an extra 5cm by 7PM. Weather forecast seems similar for next week, but we will see.

Changing conditions

The weather changes quickly this year. Last week it was -18,5 at the coldest and +1,9 at the warmest. We had gale force wind on Friday, together with heavy snow. We still managed to go out, but we stayed mostly in the forest. Interesting to feel the wind, not often it is that strong! Hot chocolate in front of the fireplace is also recomended on such a day :-)
Today we had -3, no wind and good conditions.

Winterwonderland

This has been a really nice week! Tuesday we went round Kyrkjegardsfjell and to the top of Forbundsfjell. Freshly cut tracks most of the time, cut two days ago over Forbundsfjell, that gave everything a nice soft, beautiful, glittering surface. Round Svartfjell on Wednesday and round Veslefjell today in really strong wind. The temperature has varied from minus 12 to minus 5.

Happy new year from all of us at Venabu!
The blog is always best when Robert writes it himself, but since he is not at Venabu yet, I'll try my best. I was a bit worried three weeks before Christmas because there were hardly any snow. But luckily, it came, and we had more snow this Christmas, than last year.

Actually the whole year of 2011 was unusual. Less snow than usual, a very warm April that made us give up skiing in the middle of the Easter Holiday, then too much rain in June and bad flod in the Gudbrandsdalen valey. Even the main road, E6, had to cloce for 2-3 days because of too much water on the road (up to half a meter). The whole summer was more rainy than usual. Then it seemed to be no rain left, so the automn was dry and milder than usual, so when we started waiting for snow in october, we didn't get any! Luckily everything seems to be back to normal now!
I startet guiding again the 3rd of January and I had really been looking forward to it!! And since we got some more snow last week, I would say the snowconditions are very close to perfect by now! Almost all tracks are cut, and they even forecast more snow at the end of this week.

The light is always spesial in Desember and January. When we go out in the morning, by sunrise at 10am, the mountains are colored pink, and when we get back at 2pm we have the nice colors again, just an hour before the sun sets.

On Thursday we had a nice tour all the way to the top of Svartfjell, and we saw two elks on the way. That doesn't happen very often. The elks seems to be further down in the forest in wintertime.

I guess - as you all I am also looking forward to see Venabu this year. The conditions look just great and there has been some great trips already. Winter is here

The pure white fun magic is finally here, and at the moment we've got around 35 cm. snow.

The conditions are good and the trails towards Frisketjønn are marked. Trimløypa, Trabelifjell and Kyrkjegardsfjell is also cut.

The temperature is just below 0, and the weather is partly clouded. All together a perfect place to start the skiing season, spend your christmas holiday or celebrate new year.

The winterseason is definately over! No skiconditions in the Venabu area. Some people managed to find places to ski throughout the Easterholiday, some gave up half way. But we had lovely weather and I think people enjoyed their holiday although it was different from what they expected. Some people had brought their bikes, some went walking or jogging along the road, some just enjoyed the sun. There is still a little snow left in the higher areas for those who really, really wants their last early-morning-tour, but they have to start on foot. Thank's for a lovely winterseason!!

Perfect conditions! If you like to get up early, and ski outside the tracks, you should have been here now! In the morning we can ski everywhere, and the hard surface lasts until lunchtime (2 p.m.), after lunch we have to stick to the trails. There are some bare patches, but the ponds we mentioned a few days ago, have dissapeared. We have arranged tours round Veslefjell/cannyon and towards Uksan-Brennflya the last two days.

Big changes

Since last time I wrote we have had big changes i the weather and ski conditions. Sunday and Monday were nice, but too warm, +10 Celsius in the middle of the day. Monday evening it started to rain..... but changed to snow during the night. Today we had a beautiful day, and although a lot of snow has melted, we still have enough left for skiing. The biggest problem is some small ponds that suddenly have appeared and some open streams. We went to Svartfjell today, crossed some streams, had icy and not too good conditions at the highest point of the skitrack and went to the top on foot. We saw some cranes. From now on they forecast cold nights (-2 - -6 Celcius) and warm days (+3 - +7) and nice sunny weather. That means easterconditions!!

Troll skimarathon

The skirace, Troll Skimarathon, 95 km of crosscountryskiing from Venabu to Sjusjøen was arranged today. A nice cold morning with breeze from the north, made the speed high the start. The winner, Håvard Hansen, finished his 95 km at 3:59:45!

The days are quite varm now, about +5 celsius, but the conditions are still good as long as it is colder than zero during the night. Yesterday started with local mist, then nice and sunny, but windy in the afternoon. We could ski outside the tracks in the morning, if we wanted, but had to stay in the tracks in the afternoon. Today we got 2-3 cm of wet snow. That changed the conditions from"klister" and back to a soft wax. The big discussion these days is: Will there be any snow left for Easter? Lars is sure there will be enough snow at Venabygdsfjellet!!!

Good morning. Yesterday we had a very different weather than we expected from the forecast, but very pleased that it happened. We were looking forward to some extra snow covering the hard melted surface and yesterday it finally came. There was a lot of wind following the snowfall, which clocked about 8.5mm (equals about 4-5cm of this wet snow) of precipitation. It gives us back our "hard wax" condition and nice trails. Today at 6AM: -4.1 Celsius, fresh breeze from NW, limited visibility.

Today despite of the lower visibility and cold temperatures we decided to check the sticks we put out a couple of weeks ago on Trolloypa (to Eldabu hut) and also around Grahogdbu. Everything seemed to be in order. For my surprise I managed to spot a small herd of reindeer close to Grahogdbu DNT hut. The day turned out to be a nice one, even became sunny around 3PM.

After yesterday's snowfall we had about another 8-9cm of fresh snow, but early this morning the wind started its work on it. At 7AM: -11.3 Celsius, near gale force wind from NE, very limited visibility, windchill is in the minus 30's now. Fortunately the forecast was not correct, so we had a total of 12mm precipitation in last 36hrs (equals about 12-14cm of snow). That's great news!

Some of the trails were prepared yesterday, but I guess none of them can stand this force.

Later update: Wind died down and turned out to be a great sunny, but cold day with some interesting windblown snow formations.

Good morning! It has been a long time without fresh snow, I think we deserved some and now when I look out I see a nice blanket of fresh snow on the ground. According to the weather forecast it will be overcast/partly cloudy, milder temperatures and just a little bit more snow -light snowfalls in the next days.

Weather update at 7AM: -2.9 Celsius, light breeze from E, overcast, good visibility. Looking at the weather forecast figures for yesterday, it did not seem to match. It was very mild (around 0 Celsius) compare to -7 Celsius for many hours in the afternoon and early evening.

Despite of this milder temperature the snow was holding well and the trails were fine.

We might have some snow coming on Friday.

Marking trails

Today was the day for marking trails to the nearby DNT huts. From Brennflya to Grahogdbu and from there towards Dorfallet and also to Fremre Uksan. We also marked from Indre Uksan to Eldabu. The condition was a bit of a mix, many places the wind has moved a lot of snow away, so we saw vegetation and rocks showing, other places like around Eldabu hut there was a lot of snow.
Grahogdbu area was also windblown and many of the water holes towards Brennflya were visible. Generally speaking it is a mixed condition with hard and soft snow and some visible rocks and vegetation.
Although we were occupied with marking trails we still managed to stop and look at the surroundings: spotting animal tracks (wolverine, reindeer, hare, fox), and looking at the cloud formations. Great day out!

Good morning! After a rather windy and mixed day, today we have a more normal one. Weather at 7AM: -7.1 Celsius, light breeze from S-SW, good visibility, we had about 2cm of fresh snow yesterday, which is probably ended up in the valley. It was nice to see new snow falling and we look forward to more of it. Trails cut yesterday morning were: Trimloypa, Spidsbergseter to Lundes, Trabelia and Kyrkjegardsfjellet loops and Kvandalen-Dorhogda-Fremre Uksan loop.

Mild and windy again

Trails are still holding, but some spots you see more vegetation and a few rocks coming through. Off piste areas are much harder, but you can still find some hollow and soft areas. Most of the trails are in order: Svartfjellet, Indre Uksan, Trabeliafjellet, Kyrkjegardsfjellet, Trimloype were all prepared in the last 36hrs.

Foggy morning

Good morning. The temperature has returned close to our avarage this morning: -15.9 Celsius, light breeze from W-NW, foggy. It seems like we are experiencing the full chart of weather possibilities in the last few days. After reaching +2 Celsius temperature, we had very strong wind, little snowfall and now we are on fog and cold. The wind has moved a lot of snow from many areas, so most of the mountains have started to look greyish. Despite all these facts the trail conditions look rather good and we can start looking at "off piste" tour options as well.
Of course getting more snow in the near future would be great news. As the weather forecast looks, there is now snow in the horizon. Pn these pictures: Venabygdsfjellet from Kvitfjell and Rondane National Park from Langbakken.

Good morning! After weeks/months of subzero temperature now we are enjoying the change which could help the snow structure and off piste conditions. Hopefully it will stay only for a short period and then we could get ready for some fresh snow.

Trails in the forrested areas are/were in good order.
